Resources

This toolkit is designed to support those interested in supporting arts education in our schools and communities. You may get involved at whatever level you choose—pulling useful tools to promote a local event all the way up to developing the knowledge, skills and habits to become a more effective advocate. The toolkit provides action steps, ideas, resources, and online tools to support RI state and local education policies and practices in the arts. This toolkit is designed to help school and community members ensure access to arts learning for all our RI children and youth—through programming, advocacy and communication.

How we got here and where we are today

In 2001 a statewide policy initiative was begun with the Governor’s Task Force on Literacy in the Arts (See report: A Framework for Action.) From the Task Force findings, the Rhode Island Arts Learning Network and its programs and projects were created. A large constituency of RI citizens—educational, civic and cultural leaders, students, parents, and many others—are committed to the arts as a vital part of learning. After working at the policy level for several years, we now have state policies and programs in place to support us. But WE must continue to make the policies a reality with support, promotion, and education about why the arts are important to all our young citizens.

The Policies

  1. The arts are one of six core subject areas in the RI diploma system. All students graduating from a RI public high school need to demonstrate proficiency in an art form.
  2. The Basic Education Program (BEP) further specifies that all students K-8 will have at least visual arts & design and music instruction, based on the newly adopted Arts Grade Span Expectations.
  3. The Arts Grade Span Expectations have been formally adopted by the Rhode Island Board of Regents, the first time that arts standards have been adopted for the state.

For more information on any of these policies, visit the RI Dept of Education website.

Making policy a reality is the next step. All of us can play a role. Use this toolkit to inform, connect, promote, communicate, and take action—doing whatever YOU do best!
